Target Audience

All Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-registered practitioners including physicians, podiatrists, dentists, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, clinical nurse specialists and physician assistants/physician associates who are authorized to dispense controlled substances by the state in which they practice.

Program Learning Goal

The goal of this program is to increase the knowledge, competence, and performance of healthcare providers in safe and effective controlled substance prescribing, pain management, and recognition and treatment of substance use disorders.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Review epidemiology of substance use in the United States

  • Describe common barriers to SUD care including stigma, inequity, and health literacy

  • Facilitate a standardized approach to screening for SUDs and intervening or referring for treatment

Participation in this self-study activity should be completed in approximately 1 hour. To successfully complete this activity and receive credit, learners must follow these steps during the period from May 31, 2023, through May 30, 2026:

4. Submit answers to the posttest questions and evaluation questions online.

You must receive a test score of at least 65% and respond to all evaluation questions to receive a certificate. After submitting the evaluation, you may access your online certificate by selecting the certificate link on the confirmation page. Records of all CME/CE activities completed can be found on the "My Certificates" page. There are no costs/fees for this activity.

Term of approval is from 05/31/2023 to 05/30/2026. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 credits™ toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.
