Primary care physicians should refer patients to an HIV disease specialist for selection of first-line ART. Routine primary care visits are an important and recommended way to optimize patient adherence to HIV care.142 Regimens recommended for first-line use are typically those with abundant clinical trial data showing efficacy, ease of dosing, and favorable safety profiles. Primary care physicians who regularly see patients with HIV infection who are receiving ART should have a working knowledge of recommended first-line ARV regimens, important drug–drug interactions, and adverse events associated with each agent.

Primary care guidelines are available from the HIV Medicine Association of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.142
